Redwood Plastics has the knowledge and experience to know what materials work best in a variety of industrial applications. Not all plastics are created equal and we will help you determine which material is the best for your application. Just like we did for this cedar mill…

A “motor mount” UHMW bracket was wearing prematurely in a cedar mill application. It was a 2 piece UH bearing that supported a diverter arm assembly that rotates about 45 degrees. It was operated by an air system which had very fast movement and impact. The shaft was also a Schedule 80 Pipe that had the arms welded on in-house and thus was not perfectly straight. The shaft had five mount points and the original parts were replaced every 6-8 weeks.

They wanted a solution that would take the impact and also compensate for the pipe variation.

The solution was a Redco urethane unit design with a 750 (hardness) inner ring for the wear point, an 80A(hardness) outer shell for the impact with metal inserts to allow for a solid mount. The new Redco urethane parts vastly outlasted the UHMW parts and over 100 parts have now been replaced with the new Redco urethane bracket.

Why Use Polyurethane Cutting Edges on Snow Plows?

Contractor Benefits Include:

Polyurethane exhibits better abrasion characteristics than rubber and most metals.

Polyurethane is resilient, and therefore absorbs impacts and conforms to the surface being plowed rather than damaging the plowing surface, making it the ideal choice for use on concrete, parking garages, brick, pavers, cobblestone, or any other uneven surface.

Polyurethane cutting edges reduce driver fatigue and equipment wear by minimizing blade and equipment vibration.

Polyurethane cutting edges are very quiet in operation, making them ideal for use in residential areas and hospitals.

Airport Benefits Include: (including the above)

FAA regulators strongly suggest that airport snowplows be equipped with urethane cutting edges

Polyurethane cutting edges can save you money in the long run. Polyurethane cutting edges are less likely to rip out or damage submerged lighting and pavement markings.

Reduce litter on runways-polyurethane cutting edges will eliminate metal shavings that are encountered when using metal cutting edges.

General Recommendations When Using Polyurethane Cutting Edges:

For demanding applications we recommend using 1-1/2″ thick cutting edges.

We recommend using 1-1/2″ vs. 1″ cutting edges for plows 102″ or larger.

To maximize the life of your cutting edge skid shoes should be utilized. If skid shoes are not being utilized, a 1-1/2″ cutting edge should be used.

When mounting a new cutting edge, the overhang below the moldboard should not exceed the thickness of the cutting edge.

When mounting a new cutting edge, the old steel cutting edge or piece of flat stock steel should be mounted on top of the new urethane cutting edge, acting as a large washer.

Plowing speeds in excess of 35 mph are not advised.

ALSO AVAILABLE:

Polyurethane Spinners:
Lightweight, durable polyurethane spinners are an ideal replacement for worn stock spinners as aggregate (ie: sand, salt, etc…) will not adhere to the polyurethane surface. And unlike the metal variety, polyurethane spinners resist impact damage and will never rust. Open hub or Closed hub, most configurations available.

Plastics are among the most obtainable and cost-effective materials used in a variety of applications. They are easy to fabricate, durable and efficient, resulting in an ideal material for bearings and bushings.

Because of plastics sheer usefulness and malleability, some plastic bushing grades can be designed for extreme environments and can withstand extremely high or low temperatures. Others are even suitable for hazardous environments with high levels of shock and vibration.

• Self lubricating

• Outstanding load bearing properties

• Excellent for impact and shock application

• Exceptional wear life and resistance to corrosion

• Low temperature resistance to -80°F

Different plastic grades can also be bonded together. For example, feed rollers would have a softer outer diameter with a harder inside diameter. Bringing these two materials together creates the perfect balance of shock absorption and grip with high load bearing capabilities. Metals (steel, bronze, etc) can also be bonded to plastics.

Please Consider:

Plastic Clearance/Tolerance is subject to many variables (i.e. Moisture, Cold Heat) when being machined for specific applications. If lubrication is supplied to a plastic bearing, the load and life are greatly increased dependent on the type and volume of lubricant. Consult our Machining Chart available on our website.

When walking through a modern day grocery store its hard to think back to the days when people baked their own bread, grew their own vegetables and everything you bought was from a local supplier. Times have changed and the need to keep up with the huge demand for mass produced food is growing every year – even with the current rise in demand for organic and local produce.

Every year, Hostess produces 500 million little yellow cakes… the infamous Twinkie. That’s 1,000 Twinkies a minute and 16 in a second. In the time it takes you to blink, four Twinkies come off the Hostess production line.

While all these products are being manufactured at extreme speeds – quality control, decreasing downtime and maintaining packaging integrity all come into play. If production stops or if food becomes contaminated, it can come at a huge cost. No food processing operation can afford downtime, a hefty lawsuit or the bad press of contamination.

One way to prevent costly downtime is to use high quality Redco plastics products within equipment and on production lines.

Whether in mass production, one off production, batch production or just in time production, we have solutions for wearing parts, rust, wash down, lubrication and noise. We also have NEW products available that prevent marring on bottles as well as materials that will set off metal detection equipment.

NEW!! Redco™ Polystone® M Soft
Packaging Protection

Many industries including beverage, packaging, pharmaceutical and cosmetics utilize elaborate plastic containers and delicate glass bottles. Scratches and other types of surface damage can be a challenging problem when handling these products during the manufacturing and distribution processes. That is precisely where Redco™ Polystone® M Soft is put to use. It has an optimized formulation with sliding properties that ensures a rapid and smooth conveying process and at the same time gently handles the conveyed products.

Material properties; low density, almost no absorption of moisture, very good sliding properties, excellent wear resistance, resistant to very high impact loading.

NEW!! Redco™ Polystone® M MDT
Detectable UHMW

Food processors face the ever present risk of contamination finding its way into their product. The risks and potential financial losses can be significant if not detected early. Redwood Plastics now offers a ground breaking solution to this problem with the introduction of Redco™ Polystone® M MDT. The unique additives in this product allow it to be easily traced by standard metal detectors while continuing to provide the outstanding wear resistance and sliding properties you would expect from. Designed to replace machined parts made from steel and lower performing plastics, this engineering polymer has high-impact strength, is easily machined and has no moisture absorption.

Redco™ Polystone® M MDT complies with FDA regulations concerning direct contact with food. Every food processor that utilizes metal detectors in their processing or packaging operations can easily realize the advantages of Redco™ Polystone® M MDT.

Available as: Rods: 1/2” to 8” dia, Sheets: 3/8” to 4” thick, Profiles: standard or custom.

REDCO™ 80A GRIPPER PADS

A producer of concrete construction blocks, slabs and pavers was having problems with one of it’s production lines. A piece of equipment called an antiquer had gripper pads made of rubber that were wearing out prematurely. The antiquer takes a split face block and pulls it through a set of carbide tipped flapper wheels to give the surface an antique appearance. The gripper pads are on the top and bottom of the chain to pull the blocks through.

We suggested moving to Redco™ 80A (polyurethane) and put 100 pads in place. The urethane pads are outlasting the rubber pads and standing up much better, even with their most “ugly” blocks.

Redco™ Plastics can outlast traditional materials such as rubber, wood and some metals by up to 20 times. Call us today about your application, we can help save you part replacement costs and downtime expenses.
